• Skills Required to Qualify
for Independent Living •
One who either can or is:
- Pay bills and manage finances
- Understand and follow instructions from health care providers:
- Take medication as instructed
- Schedule and keep appointments
- Carry out specific self-care instructions
- Ambulatory
- Respond properly to fire alarms (distinguish and understand difference between
general building alarm and individual apartment alarm)
- Prepare, or arrange for provision, of adequate nutrition
- Use appliances correctly and safely
- Maintain personal hygiene unassisted (baths, showers, hair, clothing)
- Maintain apartment in manner that is not offensive to others (sanitation, sounds)
- Buy or arrange for purchase of groceries and food
- Provide own transportation or make arrangements for its provision
- Dress appropriately for the season or weather (protection, not style)
- Read, understand, and follow instructions, notices, bulletins, warnings
- Use telephone properly
- Understand how to use Silent Knight emergency alarm properly
- Evacuate apartment and follow the proper procedure in doing so, in case of emergency
or fire
- Activate fire alarm appropriately
- Take proper care of a pet without outside assistance
- Conduct activities of daily living (ADL‚s) without regular, continuing assistance:
- Eating
- Dressing
- Bathing
- Using toilet
- Maintaining continence
- Walking
- Getting into and out of bed
- Free of communicable disease
- Free of diagnosis of mental illness
- Free of diagnosis of mental retardation
